Senior Data Scientist – Generative AI

Syensqo is a leading multinational materials company headquartered in Brussels. As part of its digital transformation, Syensqo has launched Syensqo.ai, a dedicated team focused on building impactful, responsible, and production-grade AI and Generative AI solutions.

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist with strong data science fundamentals and hands-on experience building Generative AI solutions using GPT-class models via APIs on Azure. This role is for a pragmatic problem solver who starts with simple, high-impact solutions, validates them using sound statistical reasoning, and improves them iteratively through careful measurement and evaluation.

The role reports to the local AI Team Lead.

Responsibilities

• Own problems end-to-end, from understanding business context and data to delivering and improving solutions in production

• Apply a simple-first, iterative problem-solving approach, delivering quick, smart solutions that are refined over time

• Prioritize problem solving over tools (classical ML, statistics, simple database lookup, deep learning, LLM, agents, etc are all game as long as they solve problems via quick iterations)

• Design and implement data science and GenAI solutions, including pipelines using GPT models via APIs, prompt engineering, agent-based workflows, and hybrid ML + LLM approaches

• Build a solid understanding of business processes, data models, and data flows

• Define, justify, and apply appropriate evaluation metrics, grounded in statistics, to assess quality, stability, and generalization

• Perform rigorous evaluation of LLM-based systems, including benchmarking, variance analysis, and failure-mode identification

• Work in Azure to deploy, orchestrate, and maintain data and AI workloads

• Communicate clearly with business and technical stakeholders, while contributing as a reliable and collaborative team player

Required experience and skills

• 5+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or applied machine learning roles

• Strong foundations in statistics, machine learning, experimental design, and model evaluation, with the ability to choose and defend appropriate metrics

• Strong hands-on experience with Python (pandas) and SQL; comfortable performing detailed data analysis when needed

• Proven experience using GPT-class LLMs via APIs in production or near-production settings

• Experience evaluating LLM-based systems, improving robustness, reducing variance, and ensuring generalizable performance

• Azure expertise is mandatory

• Solid understanding of machine learning concepts, data modeling, and end-to-end pipelines; MLOps experience is a plus

• Ability to work independently, take ownership in ambiguous situations, and collaborate effectively within a team
